S6-556-11-1 Course Information

The Cherokee Area Council is holding its next Wood Badge course, SR-556-11-1, in April, 2011. If you are interested in taking the course, fill out the Wood Badge Request for Information form. If you're sure you'd like to take the course, you can sign up on the council's web site.

This course will be conducted at Skymont Reservation in two three-day sessions.  The dates are Friday through Sunday, April 1– 3, 2011, and Saturday through Monday, April 30 – May 2, 2011.  The cost of the course is $225.00, submitted as follows: $50.00 deposit (with acceptance letter); second payment of $75.00 by January 28, 2011; and the balance of $100.00 by February 25, 2011.  The course fee includes all food for both weekends, course materials and supplies, course awards, and course activity shirt and hat.  Limited scholarship assistance is available.  Please contact Natalie McMasters at the Council office at 423-892-8323, if you have any hesitance about attending due to cost or would like to seek an alternate payment schedule.

What are the course prerequisites?

Wood Badge is open to all registered adults who have not previously attended a 21st Century Wood Badge course and have successfully completed the basic training requirements for their primary position. This generally consists of Fast Start, This is Scouting, and Position Specific Training.

What does it mean to be trained?

All leaders must have Fast Start Training, Youth Protection, and This is Scouting training. In addition to these courses, leaders need Position Specific Training.

  • Cub Scout Leaders - Cub Scout Leader Specific training has been developed for the following positions:
    • Tiger Cub den leaders
    • Cubmasters and assistants
    • Wolf and Bear Den leaders and assistants
    • Pack Committee
    • Webelos den leaders and assistants
    • Pack trainers
  • Boy Scout Leaders - Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training is for all Scoutmasters and their assistants. Boy Scout leaders also must complete Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills training to be considered fully trained.
  • Unit Committee - Unit committee members must take the committee training for their unit type.
  • Varsity Scout Leaders - Varsity Scout Coach Leader Specific is for all Varsity Coaches and assistants Coaches. Varsity Coaches and assistant Coaches must also complete Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills training to be considered fully trained.
  • Venturing Crew Leaders - Venturing crew leaders and assistants must complete Venturing Leader Specific Training, a five-session training course, to be considered fully trained. Venturing crew leaders whose crews have an outdoor program must also complete Introduction to Outdoor Skills training to be considered fully trained.

Where can I get trained?

Most training is available through district and council training events and online through http://myscouting.org. One course not available online is Introduction to Outdoor Leaders Skills, a course required for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters. This course is being taught the evening of November 5th-6th. Contact your district Training Chairperson for more information.

I'm excited and I want to register. How do I do that?

You need an invitation to attend Wood Badge. You can request an invitation one of two ways, fill out the brochure below and send it into the office or fill out the Wood Badge Request for Invitation form.
